The Person Behind the Plan
Financial planning is personal. So here's the person — what shaped me, what I believe about money, and why I do this work.
One evening, home from university, my dad offered to share a beer with me. A good father-son moment — until he went quiet, and turned serious.
He started telling me about the importance of making the right choices in life. One of his few real regrets, he said, was how we'd wasted our money when life was treating us well — holidays, long stretches where we didn't work as a family, whatever shiny new thing had caught our eye. Then life turned a full 180. And when it did, there were no investments, no savings, and no plan to fall back on. By that point, learning how to manage money was too late.
That was the night the pieces fell into place. All those books he'd made me read as a kid — The Intelligent Investor, Rich Dad Poor Dad — he hadn't done it to torment me. He'd done it so I could avoid his mistake.
Now I carry that lesson to everyone I can, so they never have to sit their own child down and share the same regret. That's why I got into financial advice, and it's still the whole of the job: someone sits down with a drawer full of statements and a quiet worry they can't quite name, and we go through it together, one decision at a time.
Money is never really about money. It's about the people you're planning for.
Along the Way
The early years
Started in financial services and learnt the trade the slow way — sitting in on client meetings, seeing what good advice looked like, and what bad advice cost.
The move to Hong Kong
Arrived from the UK with two suitcases and finances of my own that needed sorting. Doing that first — sitting on the client's side of the desk — turned out to be the best training I ever had, and moving my own life across borders taught me why cross-border planning, done properly, matters so much.
Getting qualified
Earned my SFC and IA licences — the formal grounding to advise on investments and insurance in Hong Kong properly, and the standard I hold every recommendation to.
Building the practice
Set up my advisory practice in partnership with St. James's Place Asia, serving professionals and families at every stage of wealth. Education first, advice second, products a distant third.
Ad Meliora
Started publishing what I'd been explaining across the table for years — so people could learn in their own time, before we ever speak.
